Stephen,
Whether or not the database requests an offline redo log is dependant =
on two things:
1) How long the database is in hot backup mode
2) How much transactional activity is occurring in the database.
We use EMC BCV splits to replicate databases and like you, every once in =
a while, we need an offline redo log. That's why we have the archive =
log destination as part of the BCV's.
