There are in fact 2 chapters on selectivity, which ought to serve as a warning that perhaps the one page metalink note to which you refer is rather basic. I entirely second Alex's suggestion.
I think it might be useful to look at Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals book from Jonathan (chapter on Selectivity) that has nice description for these issues.
