Oh, make sense now I think. If I CATALOG it, it doesn't matter what the filename is because RMAN will know what is in it and know it can use it? I might also try putting them in the local filesystem and see if BACKUP LOCATION works too. I'll try that out. Thanks. You can't copy an asm file and give it the name for a file number/incarnation.
