Workflow events piling up

Hello All,
Workflow events are piling up in my R12 environment. I have very less idea
on WF areas and also working with SR but it requires services to be down
with the resolutions so far.
Can someone please suggest or advice if you had similar issue in your
environment and resolved with no downtime which requires to rebuild the WF
tables?
