"From technology to sight: Looking into the future of the bionic eye"

*Join us for a Melbourne School of Engineering Dean's Lecture by BVA Director Professor Anthony N. Burkitt. *

The story of the bionic eye has captured the imagination of people all over the world. Following the announcement of Australia’s first successful bionic eye implants last year, testing of an early prototype device continues with three patients in Melbourne. What are the potential benefits for patients? How will medical bionics develop into the future? And what challenges will need to be overcome to make this clinically and commercially successful?

The event is free and all are welcome. P <http://bionicvision.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=5445596bfa6d6476cb7e1b16f&id=bd49e575a6&e=81904ecf8d>lease register online <http://bionicvision.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5445596bfa6d6476cb7e1b16f&id=9452bb36f2&e=81904ecf8d>.

*Our research is progressing well and our prototype implant is now being tested with three people. *

Murray Rowland and Maurice Skehan were implanted with prototype bionic eye devices at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. Their implants were 'switched on' late last year. Along with Dianne Ashworth <http://bionicvision.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5445596bfa6d6476cb7e1b16f&id=e1e26198b0&e=81904ecf8d>, the first recipient of the prototype implant, Murray and Maurice have been participating in weekly testing sessions with our research team. Murray, Maurice and Dianne are helping us learn an enormous amount about how the brain will interpret information from the implant. This important work will inform the development of our full bionic eye devices.

Funding

Our initial four-year research grant will run out at the end of 2013. We are working with the Australian Research Council to secure funding for 2014 but we need further support to ensure funding for bionic eye research in Australia is ongoing.

Your donation can help ensure that we can build on what has already been achieved and fulfill the promise of the bionic eye.
