So Bert

You claim that watching a TV program on a VCR was a form of Video On Demand.
Reading the first sentence of this Wikipedia article on VOD you might be able
to stretch their definition to support your claim. That is, anything that is by
the viewers choice rather than by appointment is VOD.

The article then proceeds to define VOD as what we think of today. That is, the
ability to download or stream a program over a network and watch it
immediately, or store it to view on demand.

Thus this article considers a DVR to be a VOD system, although it is really
just time shifted viewing of an appointment broadcast. In this sense a VCR was
capable of time shifting of a linear broadcast, but running to a store to buy
or rent a movie was not.

On the other hand, downloading a stored video program to local storage is VOD,
as it is not a recording of a linear broadcast.

So maybe we are both right. What is important is that almost all programming
can now be accessed "on demand" from an Internet server.

Please read the whole article, including the history and definitions of related
services such as Near Video on Demand and Push VOD.

Video on demand (VOD) are systems which allow users to select and watch/listen
to video or audio content when they choose to, rather than having to watch at a
specific broadcast time. IPTV technology is often used to bring video on demand
to televisions and personal computers.
