Looks like the main issues here are whether Google will defend VP8 against the inevitable patent infringement suits and whether VP8 is good enough to challenge h.264.

Only time will tell, but h.264 has momentum, hardware acceleration, and support at the OS level, including payment of the royalties by Apple, Microsoft and others.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out!
