And they also failed. That MediaFLO was additionally handicapped with a
subscription fee only made it that much more difficult for it to survive. (And
yet even there, Craig, you have many times made it sound like having that
subscription fee is a good thing, and people actually prefer it.)
And the carriers DO NOT dictate the features of these phones.
I'd like you to prove that. Features the carriers don't want are disabled.
Until we can buy any smartphone we want, and the subsequently any service we
want, that collusion will remain. It's a tool the cellcos have at their
disposal, and there's no reason to expect them not to exploit it.
And, how about repacking the cellular bands instead,
The industry is already addressing that issue.
How? There's no way the cellular industry is going to give up their individual
slices of spectrum, in the interest of making the best use of the spectrum.
That would be an entirely different business model.
Anyway, the only point of this thread was to show you why national (or better,
international) standards are needed, when you have to make the best use of the
spectrum. Otherwise, you end up with fiefdoms. This is true for OTA TV as it is
for cellular. The fact that the TV spectrum is far from ideal for cellular
service is just an added ingredient here.
Infrastructure sharing is now the norm,
Nonsense. The towers, perhaps. The spectrum? The transmitters?
I'm not joking Bert. The internet is filled with walled gardens.
I have explained to you enough times what the difference is. You are wrong. Pay
sites are still accessible with any PC. Computer vendors do not need to collude
with anyone.
but without your credit card,
Anyone can get a credit card, without having to collude with the PC maker.
The market for PC apps is stagnant
Totally saturated, you mean. PC browsers are virtually always included among
ways to view the content.
Just the continuing march of technology Bert.
That's exactly what I have been explaining to you, Craig. One-way broadcast as
a medium is very limited. It was the one game in town, but no more. That's how
any new service that is exclusively one-way broadcast has to be viewed, and
that includes the aspects of ATSC 3.0 that are always being discussed. The
words talk about interactive, on demand, and the rest. The deeds instead are
all one-way broadcast.
