Here's an interesting web site I ran across in the
current issue of the IEEE Capital Area Scanner:

www.sharedspectrum.com/?section=3Dpresentations

(Remember to remove the "3D" after the equals sign.)

The top presentation is the one of interest. It
describes how frequency-agile radio systems can
find free spectrum to use for temporary interactive
sessions.

It discusses the advantages and classic problems
with these schemes, including the "hidden node"
problem, and it states that such frequency agile
systems must, in practice, in addition to
monitoring the desired spectrum before using it,
also include a priori knowledge of emitters in
that location.

But the most relevant part of the presentation for
our purposes here is that it places this technique
IN CONTEXT. As in, this is what it's targeted at.
