I've just caught up on the threads I've missed. Here are a few comments: - Camera sizes: Imagers now commonly have diagonals (lens-image diameters) as small as 3 mm. All else being equal (which it never is), smaller imagers are less sensitive. - WMV9 and VC-9: WMV9 is Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9 video codec. VC-9 is the similar system being standardized by SMPTE. WMV9 is said to be lacking in such areas as channel changing and dealing with interlace, both of which issues (among others) are addressed in VC-9, which may be considered an advanced profile of WMV9. According to a presentation by Harmonic at the PBS Technology Conference at the NAB convention, VC-9 and H.264 (AVC/MPEG-4 Part 10) are pretty comparable, with perhaps a tiny advantage to the latter in some scenes. But WMV9 in an interlaced, channel-changing environment was considered actually less efficient than MPEG-2. The licensing for VC-9 is still up in the air. MPEG LA has been putting together a pool for it. - Mercury lamps: Doug's TV probably uses a UHP lamp or something comparable. Those lamps operate at more than 200 atmospheres of pressure, at which they emit a continuous spectrum rather than the typical individual lines of mercury. By the way, on a street corner in Xi'an, China, I saw an ad for a 1080p TV.
