PBS is still fully committed to 1080i. All programming distribution to member stations is and will continue to be 1080i.

Many stations, ours included, have found that 720p compresses more efficiently and allows for more multicasts in the multiplex than 1080i does. So many stations have decided to use 720p as their distribution format.

Also, who is left transmitting 1080i for HD? I noticed that our PBS
station, WETA, went from 1080i to 720p and that Ion also went 720p for
its new HD stream. Fox and ABC are also 720p. I'll check tonight if I
remember, but it could be that 1080i is being phased out gradually?
