FOX and ABC have always been committed to 720p.

I did go home and check.

Turns out, we now receive 10 HDTV streams (having lost two from
Baltimore that went to low power VHF on June 12th). Seven of the 10 HD
we do receive now transmit 720p.

CBS9, NBC4, and CW50 are the only 1080i hold-outs. But CW54, from
Baltimore, a Sinclair station, is instead 720p.

This is what I had expected was going to happen, way back when everyone
was complaining about interlacing and ATSC. Because the cameras these
days don't create interlaced streams, as the first HD cameras did. So
there's not much excuse left for transmitting in interlaced mode.

There is still plenty of 1080i equipment out there. Most cameras can output 720P or 1080i. Only a handful can output 1080@60P.

But you are right - interlace is too costly in terms of bits (especially at 1080i), when you are sharing the bit budget with SD and MH streams. Where you can expect further change will be the adoption of 480P for SD streams to conserve bits - probably 360 x 480P if older sets do not barf on it. Or 640 x 480P might finally get used.

Craig
