There is still plenty of 1080i equipment out there. Most cameras can output 720P or 1080i. Only a handful can output 1080@60P.
But you are right - interlace is too costly in terms of bits (especially at 1080i), when you are sharing the bit budget with SD and MH streams. Where you can expect further change will be the adoption of 480P for SD streams to conserve bits - probably 360 x 480P if older sets do not barf on it. Or 640 x 480P might finally get used.
