Strange. In the past, digital switchovers have been rather anticlimactic. Finland switched off analogue terrestrial signals at 4am on Saturday. Analogue cable operators have six months to complete the roll-out of digital networks in the country. Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat said Digita's helplines were jammed soon after switchover. "Even though we were prepared for a large number of calls, the day was busier than we had been able to anticipate," Digita's Riitta Kontulam told Helsingin Sanomat. Finnish viewers turned to Digita for guidance in installing digital decoders, with some spending up to half an hour talking to a helpline adviser. Finland has yet to agree on what to do with spectrum liberated by switchover. The nation's switchover also affected 50,000 homes in Estonia that regularly watched Finland's analogue channels. Estonia is due to complete its digital switchover in 2011. A survey suggested that by mid-August some 220,000 homes in Finland still had not purchased digital terrestrial set-top boxes.
