You mean like the ATSC standard and the FCC mandate?
It works too, but obviously not as well. For example, I could have subscribed
to Sling TV any old time, as soon as it began service. But my wife noticed
only yesterday that our Roku 3 box has added Sling TV as one of its choices.
Why the wait? Some sort of under the table deals, no doubt. And the Roku
still can't get cbs.com, or any of the other FOTI network sites.
Some kind of BUSINESS deal Bert.
Roku has "deals" with a bunch of Viacom (CBS) properties. Showtime, CBS All
Access, and CBS Sports to name a few. Viacom wants to be on the home screen for
Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, etc. these are the devices people are
buying to connect their TVs to OTT services. The website front ends are not
where the BUSINESS is.
Just like Apple, Roku and the others get a share of the revenues when they
bring customers to these services. That does not mean they get a cut of
everything, just new subscriptions sold via each ecosystem.
CBS waited until 2013 before allowing iOS to access cbs.com.
There is no iOS access to CBS.com.
iOS does support Safari and other browsers that access CBS.com. The big problem
with CBS has been their reliance on FLASH. The delay was primarily on CBS to
support HTML-5 and h.264.
CBS also imposes an 8 day delay, when streaming to the Windows Phone app (and
presumably, also to iOS). But CBS does not impose this delay, and never has,
when streaming to PCs. I have never read that the Dells, HPs, and Lenovos,
had to get in bed with CBS, to achieve this.
Using websites as the front end for streaming video was the only game in town
for a few years. It still is a viable market segment for legacy PCs. But the
web interface was primarily driven by the requirements of desktop PCs. When
mobile devices started to access the Web things started to change. Most web
services now detect the type of device accessing the site and deliver
appropriate resources to each device class. The devices connected to TVs are a
new class, and the UI is by necessity quite different than the PC browser
interface.
But there is much more to this than this evolutionary change in the web. The
content owners seek to monetize their streaming TV services. They are moving
AWAY from websites like CBS.com; they are moving toward monetized Apps.
You can already see this at CBS.com, as they use the site to sell CBS All
Access. More and more of the content and services you came to expect from
CBS.com are morning behind pay walls as consumers pay to avoid the ads that
have supported "Free TV" for decades.
That's why I call it collusion. It is the artificial building of extra
barriers, and not for the benefit of consumers.
They are not in business to benefit consumers. They are in business to benefit
the company and its stock holders. As the ad support model declines they have
no choice but to find new ways to monetize their content.

His primary point — something he's likely to reiterate after CBS reports its
quarterly earnings on Thursday afternoon — is that "Our business is changing
rapidly. If you look at where we were five years ago, we didn't even know
half these companies. Now... something like 40% of the revenue that CBS is
getting didn't exist five years ago." Like other major media companies, CBS
is making a number of digital bets, some of them in-house (like the CBS All
Access streaming service) and some of them with outside companies.
40% of their revenue is coming from new sources - mostly paid streaming
services. That's called BUSINESS Bert. You can keep calling it collusion if you
want...Les is not listening to you.
Not the case. You need to experiment to see. Web browsers are hardly
different from the UI of the special "app." All you do is bookmark the "full
length episodes" web site, and then it's extremely straightforward. And
there's nothing to prevent the manufacturer from fine tuning the pointing
device. I find the use of the wireless mouse utterly straightforward, but
perhaps manufacturers could come up with other gizmos, such as joysticks or
whatever.
Seems Bert is hopelessly dependent on last century legacy technologies.
And the TV is optimized for Nyquist filtered imagery;
That's only a matter for the display used. There's simply no problem viewing
web sites on HDTV sets, Craig.
Really. Most sets still overscan. For a web browser to work properly you need a
1:1 relationship between source and display pixels. Any scaling really screws
things up because of the scaling filters.
Fortunately 2 Mpixel displays do a decent job with web content. 4K displays
will largely solve this problem; and with HDR the TV will become a much more
friendly screen for e-commerce. But the UI will not be anything like your OC
driven TV.
