I would posit -- since this is NOT news -- that they were just shining you
on, and with the prospect of spring being in the air in DC, they decided
that playing with you had stopped being so much fun, and they finally told
you the truth.

It's just another problem with putting one's faith in politicians.  And, to
get even more real:  how much did you and confederates -- money that can be
tracked back to you -- contribute to his re-election campaign in the most
recent cycle?

Representatives, you see, have to be re-elected every two years.  They spend
as much time on fund raising as they do on policy.
