Good news,

Renaming the folder did the trick.  Not only that, but route works!  I 
set up a default route on my LAN as was able to ping www.yahoo.com and 
www.google.com.   I was also able to establish an ftp connection to 
ftp.microsoft.com.  I am on my way out the door, but I will set up a 
formal test plan for route when I get home...
