I often have them write down years that were important to them and start there. Their birth year, 1776, 1860, 1863, 1492, 1963, 1068, etc. The dates definitely get my kids talking about history too. I never forget 2004 2007 and 2013...the last three times the Red Sox won the World Series. This is just one way we work on larger numbers.
