The pewee is back this morning. I chased it around for about twenty minutes,
without ever getting a good look at it. It continues to make a soft "pe-dee"
every two to four seconds. The call actually sounds quite a bit like the two
note call of a Black-capped Chickadee. A couple of times it also uttered an
rising "prreeee" with no burry tones. I have yet to hear it utter any call I
would associate with a Western Wood Pewee. This morning it was working the high
canopy of large alders and the lower dead branches of a very large fir near the
creek, so the only views I had of it were well above me. I was not able to get
a good side view. the one time I got a frontal view I could see that it had a
dark vest which appeared to be a bit streaked on the sides. The darkness of the
breast was set off from a whitish or grayish white throat. Also I watched it
call a number of times, and could see that the lower mandible was mostly orange
lower mandible. The jury is still out.
