Daniel Farrar and I joined the dozen or so birders checking lower Coos Bay on Monday for the Common Eider. As far as I know, no one found it. We had a nice day in the field, saw a couple of Pigeon Guillemots, a pile of Red-necked Grebes, a few pelicans, a couple of Eurasian Wigeon and other standard-model Coos Bay birds. Also saw Barbara Griffin, age 86, walk all the way out Fossil Point, clambering over the rocks, and join us on the eider scan for a while. A birder for the ages: I salute her. By early afternoon a strong north wind had come up, scopes were flabbergusted (a technical term meaning that the wind is strong enough to constantly wobble the tripod) and the bay covered with whitecaps, so we pulled the plug around 2:15 or so. -- Alan Contreras Eugene, Oregon acontrer56@xxxxxxxxx I blog at: oregonreview.blogspot.com
