Doug & All, Foster Reservoir is a good site for migrant loons and wintering grebes, and used to generate regular reports in the early 2000s. However the site has been somewhat underreported in recent years as some of the more active Linn Co. birders seem to be getting out less often to check the reservoir. Your report is a good reminder that now is a good time to look for loons, grebes, and scoters on Foster and other deep-water lakes/reservoirs in the Western Cascades & higher up. There was a report of multiple Surf Scoters from Suttle Lake yesterday. It's a nice time to get up in the mountains if you can find the time. Good birding, Joel P.S. Here are some excerpts from Greg Gillson's 2002 draft "Birds of Linn County": Common Loon Uncommon migrant and rare winter visitor on lakes in the Western Cascades region. High number: 5 on April 11, 1999 on Foster Reservoir (Roy Gerig, OBOL); 5 on October 28, 1999 on Foster Res. (Jeff Fleischer, OBOL). Early date: September 1983 at Foster Res. (Rick and Jan Krabbe, Chat13(2)). Western Grebe Common winter visitor and uncommon migrant on deep lakes in the Western Cascades region. High number: about 100 on November 11, 1990 on Detroit Lake near Southshore Campground (Phil Pickering, pers. comm.). Early date: July 27, 1990 at Clear Lake (Don Hall, pers. comm.).
