Hi all,

This turned up on the Nevada birding list.

http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/species/birds/yellow-billed_cuckoo/pdfs/Cuckoo_final_listing.pdf

These birds are considered to be extirpated as a breeding species from
Oregon. However, in addition to sightings of presumed vagrants in SE
Oregon, there have been a few recent breeding-season records on the
Sandy River Delta near Portland, and about 15 years ago an ODFW
biologist reported one at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area.

Oregon gets a negative mention in this document, as the only state
within the historic breeding range for which the state wildlife agency
did not send in comments to USFWS (California, Washington, Nevada,
Idaho, the 4-corners states, and Texas all sent in comments).

Washington's Department of Natural Resources did put in a plug for
Oregon in their comments, as a place where cuckoos could eventually
benefit from riparian habitat enhancements that have been undertaken to
protect salmonids. They also mentioned a couple of other habitat types
found in western Washington and Oregon, that had not been fully
recognized as potential cuckoo habitat in the draft listing document.

Besides Sandy River Delta, some places to think about monitoring in
future years include gallery forest remnants at Grand Island (Yamhill
Co.), Luckiamute Landing (Polk Co.), the Santiam River near Crabtree,
and some of the McKenzie Land Trust properties near Eugene/Springfield
-- basically anyplace where you might look for Red-eyed Vireos.

Central/eastern Oregon birders might be interested to read the comments
about willow habitats and encroachment of tamarisk in SE Oregon, to get
some ideas on possibilities as well as threats.

Happy reading,
Joel
