In the past weeks, Steller's Jays have been testing the hunting prowess of
young SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS here, more like taunting, or thumbing their noses
at these little guys. A few times an adult SSHA will show up, possibly for
instructing the youngster how not to be taunted.
Yesterday a far more effective accipiter blasted into our yard from
downslope, just clearing the 4 foot fence and right for the big platform
feeder. Doves and jays scattered, Karan gasped, and the yard went silent
for minutes.
Too fast for a clear identification, big even for a female Cooper's Hawk.
Probably about time for a NORTHERN GOSHAWK again.
