Hi all: A field trip at Ankeny NWR almost always offers surprises. Today's field trip was no exception. Easily the most notable surprise was a *CHIPPING SPARROW*, seen on the trail on our return leg of the loop around Willow Marsh. Willow Marsh is adjacent to the Sidney Ditch, on the far side of Eagle Marsh. A photo today's Chipping Sparrow -- https://plus.google.com/photos/107892236367702076331/albums/6001927571417066849 Other notables were: - FOY American Bittern, seen on edge of Willow Marsh - FOY Sora, heard on Willow Marsh - FOY Wood Duck (a pair along side Willow Marsh) - A large flock of Rock Pigeons flying over Sidney Ditch (seemed a bit out of place) - A dramatic increase in numbers of Common Yellowthroat (36) and Orange-crowned Warblers (11) in the past week or so. - A Snow Goose, hanging out with around 2,000 Cackling Geese on the large field near the Willow Tree Parking Lot on Wintel Rd - Cliff Swallows are building nests in the rafters of the shelter at Eagle Marsh parking lot. A complete list of today's birds follows.
