*SAS Minto-Brown Island Park Field Trip Summary*
Barbara, Fred, Kay and I were joined by two other birdwatchers for our
Salem Audubon field trip today. We walked 2.5 miles with no rain. The
temperatures were very pleasant as we started out at 61 degrees and it was
66 degrees at the end of the walk. We covered the eastern part of the park
including checking near the gate to the North end of the park then
continued back along the river. Due to construction of the bridge we did
not attempt to go out to the far north end of the park. The bird activity
was very good overall with a total of 46 species identified (seen and/or
heard).
The highlights were as follows:
- We saw a *Lazuli Bunting* at the eastern portion of the park. The
bunting was quite vocal as though it was protecting its large area;
- We saw two *Bald Eagles* to the east;
- We also observed two accipters but we were unable to identify
either one because of the distance they were away from us;
- It was a three woodpecker day as we observed the *Downy Woodpecker,
Pileated Woodpecker *(heard)* and Northern Flicker*;
- We heard several *California Quail* near a trail we took through a
field;
- A *Willow Flycatcher* that was constantly giving its Fee-bee call
was heard near the Lazuli Bunting area;
- Saw a *Green Heron* along the Willamette River;
- There were quite a few swallows around including *Tree*,
*Violet-Green*, *Cliff* and *Barn Swallows*. We did not see the *Northern
Rough-winged Swallows* this time;
- We saw quite a few *Common Yellowthroats* (both male and female)
and heard at least seven (7) *Yellow Warblers*.

be at Ankeny NWR on *Saturday, July 23rd at 7:00 a.m*. Meet at the
