For any birders with an interest in the Natural Areas of Portland's parks,
there is a community open house tomorrow (Tuesday) evening regarding the River
View Natural Area, the newly acquired parkland adjacent to the River View
Cemetery near Lewis & Clark College. This is a large forested parcel whose
management will have repercussions for habitat and birdlife in SW Portland and
the region. The open house is to share information with the public about plans
for its management, and to hear feedback from the public about how they want it
managed. A second open house will be held in March. As a project advisory
committee member, I will be a voice for the birds, but they can always use more.

Info on the Tue. event is below. Further info is here:

> PROJECT BACKGROUND
> The River View Natural Area (RVNA) is a 146-acre forested parcel connecting
> Forest Park to the north, Tryon State Natural Area to the south and the
> Willamette River to the east. It is nested between SW Macadam Avenue and SW
> Terwilliger Boulevard in southwest Portland. The RVNA has significant
> ecological value – 7 streams, 130 plant species, 31 mammal species, and 74
> avian species have been documented at this site. It comprises about half of
> the forest canopy in the 350-acre River View Subwatershed of the Lower
> Willamette Watershed.
>
> Under private ownership until 2011, the RVNA was logged in the 1800’s and
> 1950’s and subjected to vegetative neglect over the next 60 years. In July of
> 2011, the City of Portland, in partnership with Metro and Trust for Public
> Land, acquired the property. It is one of the largest single natural area
> acquisitions in the City’s history. PP&R is working with a consultant team, a
> technical advisory committee, and a project advisory committee to create a
> Management Plan that will protect and enhance the natural resources of the
> RVNA. More information at www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/riverview
