The best way to avoid this dilemma is to just holler out "Ivory-billed Woodpecker!!" every time you see one. When someone corrects you by saying, "Umm, that's a Pileated Woodpecker," you'll know how they think it should be pronounced. If someone else disagrees with them, let them fight it out.
