Nothing gets folks dander up like the pronunciation of pileated (except maybe parula). The word is Latin and means wearing a _pileus_. In ornithological parlance, it means capped (Pileated Warbler) or crested (Pileated Woodpecker). In Latin, the long "i" is pronounced the way the i in machine is pronounced so the Latin pronunciation would be peee- lee- 8- ed (long i mostly differs from short i by the length of time one holds the sound). Both PILE-ee-8-ed and PILL-ee-8-ed are anglicized forms of the Latin original word and have strong regional associations. Most dictionaries include both choices. That explanation should bring the Latin scholars out of the Woodwork. -- Mike Patterson Astoria, OR The Problem With Big Years http://www.surfbirds.com/community-blogs/northcoastdiaries/?p=2550 OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
