Hello All,
Winter Wings Festival starts today in Klamath Falls, and I would love to be
there, but had some scheduling conflicts. My friend Jill Ward and I
decided to head down there a few weeks in advance to see what we would be
missing. We spent two nights in town and got a chance to do most of the
auto routes for Lower Klamath and Tule Lake NWR's. The warm weather is
creating muddy conditions on the dirt roads so some of it was impassable.
It was also foggy in the mornings, so no visible eagle flyout! I had
completely not made allowances for much of the lakes being frozen over
either, funny when you're not used to thinking about that. Regardless, we
had a great time and saw 46 species, of which the highlights for me were:
California Towhee (after much deliberation)
Black-Crowned Night Heron
Loggerhead Shrike
Ferruginous Hawk
Barrow's Goldeneye
Acorn Woodpecker
I hope that the ice has melted more for all the festival attendees, and
that you all have a great time!
