Sitting on the patio just now I heard a Steller's Jay imitating a Goshawk, which they do at our house many times a day. I looked up to see a real GOSHAWK soaring high overhead. After circling several times it left the thermal and went into a rapid glide westward. As always, I'm never sure if these mid-April Goshawks are migrants or local nesters. But anyone coming out on a quest for Sooty Grouse and Mountain Quail has the real chance of a Goshawk bonus. As Stefan Schlick's post attests, these efforts in western Washington County can be richly rewarding at the moment.
