I walked the Fern Ridge dike main loop from 7:30-11:00 this morning with Tom
Cable and Tye Jeske. Highlights were one Semi Sandpiper, one Pectoral
Sandpiper, one Bank Swallow and a GH Owl sitting more or less in the open. Also
one praying mantis that Tye somehow saw as we were walking along. Crawdad
numbers are phenomenal.
Tye will post to eBird later. Some estimates:
55 White Pelican
8 bittern (maybe my personal day record)
7 Green heron
20+ Black Tern, mostly imms
2 BB Plover
8 Semi Plover
40 Killdeer
350 LB Dows (half of these far off)
45 G Yellowlegs
2 L Yellowlegs
1 Pectoral
100 Least
50 Western
1 Semi Sand
The Bank Swallow seems early. It was hanging with a group of about forty imm
Trees roosting in the sticks as you walk in Royal Ave. My impression was this
was a migrant group, not local talent, mainly because the area was full of
foraging swallows and these seemed to be more interested in resting.
It might be worth noting the swallow mix for the morning. When I paid attention
I saw at least 90% Tree. Small numbers of Barn and VG. Martins overhead most of
the time. I saw one Cliff, one Bank and no Roughwings. My impression is that
VGs tend to use rivers more than other habitats after fledging is done. They
also use the outer beaches a lot.
