I checked my records for dark-eyed junco sightings dating back to 2010.
In 2010 we saw a junco in late (2nd half) July and again in early (1st half)
September, but not in August or early July.
In 2011 we saw a junco in late August but not in July, early August or early
September.
In 2012 we saw a junco in early August but not in July, late August or early
September.
In 2013 we had no junco sightings at Lost Lagoon Farm.
In 2014 we saw a dark-eyed junco in late July but not in early July, August or
early September.
In 2015 we saw juncos in early and late August and early September.
This history tells me that an occasional summer sighting of a dark-eyed junco
on our property (elevation about 10-15’ above sea level) is usual. However,
this time of year it always takes us by surprise.

Like Alan, we don't see them most of the summer but they breed near us in the
neighborhood hillsides and we had a single young bird visit for a couple of
days in late June.
I am intrigued that they are nearby but don't visit regularly or in any
notable numbers until fall.

Could be from local breeding. I live in residential Eugene and a pair breeds
just up the block. After they are done they wander around a bit.
