On Saturday (10/11) I led a Cape Arago Audubon trip to Bandon. Birding was
slow actually, but we did find a RUDDY TURNSTONE with 75 Black Rockflippers
and 15 Surfbirds at the outlet of the sewage treatment plant. Most
numerous award goes to the 2,500-3,000 CA Gulls there. While on the trip
Bruce Follansbe told me he had seen an ACORN WOODPECKER in September up Mt.
Bolivar. This is the 5th report this year! Since 1986 we have had 9
reports, all since 2010.

Late yesterday I drove up to Mt. Bolivar (in far SE Coos) and hiked up
there this morning. Beautiful sunrise on the peak, but not many birds
although I did hear N. Saw-whet, Pygmy and Great Horneds.

I then took the long way home and my next birding spot was Agness, Curry.
I birded the USFS Guard Station there and surprise(!) had a calling SWAMP
SPARROW, perhaps a first for the location?

I headed west to Gold Beach then and just about when I was back to town
something interesting flew past me into a trailer park. I tracked the bird
down along the edge of the Rogue in some willows- a WESTERN TANAGER.

I looked for ELEGANT TERNS in Gold Beach but could only find 20, as the
thousand+ CA Gulls made finding them difficult.

Heading north I stopped into Ophir to check the huge flowering fuschia I
had seen the subadult RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMER in recently. it was still there
and several Anna's were chasing it constantly. While checking the fuschia
a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW flew in and posed for me!

From there I took a quick 10 minute stop into AZ Beach SP where I heard
then saw a calling YELLOW WARBLER but was in a hurry so didn't stay long.

I then headed north again to Knute Andersson's place SW of Langlois where I
spent a couple hours. We were able to find 4 PALM WARBLERS while cruising
the cranberry bogs there.

I decided to stop in Lower 4-mile Creek, Coos (a few miles south of Bandon)
on my "home" stretch. Good thing I did, a TROPICAL KINGBIRD flew overhead,
circled me, then continued on north.

Fun two days for sure!
Merry October,
