I use an addon as my main synth, ProTalker, which reads Japanese for me
when it appears in what I'm reading. I don't want my addons disabled. I
want to be able to update them without something fundamental breaking.
It seems I'll have to take the clean install option and make sure I save
my dictionaries, because I somehow doubt deleting the Emoticons item
from inside the NVDA/Addons folder in appdata/roaming will remove the
record of that addon being there.

Normally if you install over the old version with a portable version
it just says updating and fixes it, albeit with the same add ons
in it.
It sounds to me like the uninstaller for the add on is not putting
things back correctly, and still leaving something pointing at the
files which are not there any more.
This issue seems to have happened since the mod for the .ini file
checking was put in. but its a while back now so I don't recall it
that well.

I was talking about my previous experiences with this problem.
When I
tried to uninstall/update the emoticons addon using the addons
manager,
and then restarted NVDA, I'd get an error sound and have to manually
restart NVDA again during that session. When I restart the
computer, I
hear an error sound and NVDA refuses to start when I try to
manually do
so. My mother said the error that pops up says something about a
particular python module that cannot be found. NVDA will not work
and I
have to uninstall it and reinstall it from my portable copy. I've
been
through this several times already. Someone suggested I delete the
emoticons folder from the addons folder in appdata/roaming, but
due to
previous experiences I'm cautious.
I still don't know why uninstalling this addon results in an
apparently
vital component of NVDA being deleted at the same time. I wish I
had an
answer to that.

Yes, it's safe to manually delete a folder from addons. When an
addon
is installed, the installer creates the folder there.
If you really wanted to be safe, you could simply move the
folder for
the addon onto your desktop, then restart NVDA. If it starts
correctly, then everything's fine.
Why do you need sighted help to get NVDA started again? You can
simply
open the run dialog and type in its path.

Some older synths may not work properly in current versions of
NVDA.
And to get to the portable version without sighted assistance
you can
first create a different shortcut for the portable version and
use
that after the restart.
