I hope all is well!!! We are in need of judges and/or mentors for the 2017 Real
World Design Challenge. I hope you and any colleagues at will be able to help
with judging and/or mentoring. There is no travel involved. Almost all of the
Mentoring and Judging can be done virtually. Additional information on Judging
and Mentoring is below.

Real World Design Challenge Summary
The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an annual competition that provides
high school students, nationally, with the opportunity to apply the lessons of
the classroom to the technical problems currently faced in the engineering
field. Each year students are challenged to optimize the design of a plane. The
goal of the RWDC is to motivate and prepare students for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The RWDC is going into its seventh
year of operation.
Judging Descriptions.
Below are the 3 types of judges and a description of their responsibilities and
time requirements. You may volunteer to be one or more of these types of
judges. State Judges and National Technical Judges work remotely but National
Challenge Judges need to come to the National 4 H Center in Chevy Chase MD for
their Judging Activity.
State Judge (1/7/17-1/23/17)- Read and score the Engineering Design Notebooks
(80 pages) to determine the state winners. It takes about 2-4 hours to score an
Engineering Design Notebook. Judges use the RWDC Scoring Rubric to evaluate the
teams' Engineering Design Notebooks (the team's solutions).
National Technical Judge (4/3/17-4/17/17)- Read and score the Engineering
Design Notebooks (80 pages) two week before the national judging begins. It
takes about 2-4 hours to score an Engineering Design Notebook. Judges use the
RWDC Scoring Rubric to evaluate the teams' Engineering Design Notebooks (the
team's solutions).
Challenge Judges (4/22/17 at 4-H Center in Chevy Chase MD)- Judge all of the
presentations in their room and then meet with the other judges to decide merit
award winners and the top 3 teams.
Mentors
Anyone who is currently employed as a scientist, mathematician, or engineer may
volunteer to participate as a mentor. These professionals might be employed at
Federal Agencies like the FAA, and NASA, Aerospace/Aviation related industry
and higher education.
What Commitment does a Mentor make?
* Once registered, you will be contacted to confirm the information that
will be placed on the RWDC site.
* Mentors must be available to work with teams until the completion of the
State competition, December, 2016.
* Teams that qualify for the National Challenge will be expected to contact
their mentor and request their continued participation through the completion
of the competition in April 2017.
* Teams will choose mentors to fit their needs. This may mean that
individuals who volunteer to mentor may not be contacted by a team.
* Individuals who wish to volunteer as mentors are free to define the
boundaries of their participation as they wish.
* Mentors are asked to specify the number of teams they are willing to
assist.
* Mentors may place limits on the time they are willing to commit to the
mentorship process.
* Mentors are able to identify the content areas in which they will
provide assistance.
* Mentors ARE NOT expected to learn the Engineering software or provide
advice or guidance in an area outside of their expertise.
Mentors Should be Willing to:
* Present science, engineering and mathematics concepts in a fun and
exciting way.
* Stimulate creative thinking and problem solving processes.
* Help students experience the satisfaction of solving real world problems.
* Provide advice on science, math and engineering principles.
* Act as a resource for the team regarding science, engineering and
mathematics.
* Act as a role model for the students.
* Keep the team informed of the constraints on the mentor's time and
availability.
* Provide honest advice that is developmentally appropriate for the
students.
Your help will make a significant difference on the lives of these students!
Thank you for all of your help!
