The George Washington University is an independent, non-sectarian University in the heart of our nation's capital, only four blocks from the White House. In addition to the Law School, the University includes schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, International Affairs, Medicine, Professional Studies and Public Health, and has a student enrollment in excess of 23,000. The Law School, the oldest in the District of Columbia, and one of the largest in the nation, has a full-time faculty of over 90 and draws on the rich legal community in Washington D.C. for a part-time faculty of nearly 300, which permits it to offer one of the most varied curricula in the country. The Law School offers both full and part-time J.D. education to approximately 1700 J.D. students and approximately 300 graduate law students, who pursue specialized LL.M. programs in Environmental Law, Government Procurement Law, Intellectual Property, International Law, Corporate and Business Law, National Security and U.S. Foreign Policy Law, and Litigation and Dispute Resolution, as well as in general graduate legal education. The Dean is the chief academic officer of the Law School, with primary responsibility for advancing the scholarly and teaching missions of the institution. The Dean reports to the University President through the Provost. The Dean's responsibilities include leadership of the faculty, students and staff of the Law School and representation of the School within the University and with both the local Washington and national legal communities. Applicants for the post should be eligible for appointment as a tenured professor of law; have an earned J.D. or equivalent degree, and a demonstrated record of exemplary achievement. Applicants should have a vision for enhancing the quality of legal education. They should also have skills necessary for the leadership and administration of an institution of considerable size and complexity; be able to work effectively with the various constituencies in the Law School and University community; have both a willingness to undertake, and skill in, fund-raising; highly value collegiality and a broad range of intellectual approaches and professional interests; and have a commitment to equal opportunity and diversity in faculty and student recruitment. Screening of applicants will begin on December 1, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.
