Dean of the Law School

The George Washington University invites applications and nominations for the
position of Dean of the Law School.

The George Washington University is an independent, non-sectarian University in
the heart of our nation's capital, only four blocks from the White House. In
addition to the Law School, the University includes schools of Arts and
Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, International Affairs, Medicine,
Professional Studies and Public Health, and has a student enrollment in excess

The Law School, the oldest in the District of Columbia, and one of the largest
in the nation, has a full-time faculty of over 90 and draws on the rich legal
community in Washington D.C. for a part-time faculty of nearly 300, which
permits it to offer one of the most varied curricula in the country. The Law
School offers both full and part-time J.D. education to approximately 1700 J.D.
students and approximately 300 graduate law students, who pursue specialized
LL.M. programs in Environmental Law, Government Procurement Law, Intellectual
Property, International Law, Corporate and Business Law, National Security and
U.S. Foreign Policy Law, and Litigation and Dispute Resolution, as well as in
general graduate legal education.

The Dean is the chief academic officer of the Law School, with primary
responsibility for advancing the scholarly and teaching missions of the
institution. The Dean reports to the University President through the Provost.
The Dean's responsibilities include leadership of the faculty, students and
staff of the Law School and representation of the School within the University
and with both the local Washington and national legal communities.

professor of law; have an earned J.D. or equivalent degree, and a demonstrated
record of exemplary achievement. Applicants should have a vision for enhancing
the quality of legal education. They should also have skills necessary for the
leadership and administration of an institution of considerable size and
complexity; be able to work effectively with the various constituencies in the
Law School and University community; have both a willingness to undertake, and
skill in, fund-raising; highly value collegiality and a broad range of
intellectual approaches and professional interests; and have a commitment to
equal opportunity and diversity in faculty and student recruitment.

Screening of applicants will begin on December 1, 2010 and will continue until
the position is filled. To be assured of full consideration, applications and
nominations should be submitted by December 1, 2010. Applicants should submit a
letter of application, resume, and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of
at least three references. The anticipated starting date for the position is
