BIRD WALKS SATURDAY, MAY 12 AND MONDAY, MAY 14 AT HUTCHINSON TRACT NEAR TAPPAHANNOCK The Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct two bird walks at the Hutchinson Tract of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife just west of Tappahannock. This 700+ acre tract, fronting on Mount Landing Creek and Route 17, has restored grasslands, tidal marshes, and deep mature forests. This is prime time for migratory birds, especially warblers, returning from the south. Possible sightings include scarlet and summer tanagers, bobolinks, eastern blue birds and meadow larks, kingbirds, grasshopper sparrows, northern bobwhite, eastern towhees, bald eagles, ospreys, red tailed hawks, Acadian flycatchers, woodpeckers, tufted titmice, and warblers, such as black and white, northern parula, yellow throated and common yellow throats. On Saturday, May 12, to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day, Frank Schaff, in conjunction with the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, will lead a bird walk at 8:30 at the Hutchinson Tract. Participants should meet at the barn near the entrance to the tract. See directions below. On Monday, May 14, the NNAS will conduct a bird walk at the Hutchinson Tract, also led by Frank Schaff. Carpools will leave Grace Episcopal Church at 7:15 a.m. Those driving directly should meet at the Hutchinson tract at 8:15 a.m. The Hutchinson Tract is located approximately one and one half miles north of Tappahannock on Route 17 on the left hand side. Heading north, you will pass a large brick church on the left. Go to the next cross over and head back south on Route 17. Turn right into the first driveway by the refuge sign. (If you cross Mount Landing Creek going north, you have gone too far.) Meet at the barn near the entrance For additional information, call Frank Schaff at 804-462-0084.
