************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** Windows key leak threatens mass piracy An installation key code for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 has leaked onto the Internet, and could lead to widespread piracy of the software, scheduled to be released April 24, 2003. Microsoft developed installation keys to protect its software against piracy--the key is used to install the software, then to activate it through Microsoft over the Internet. However, such an installation procedure can be laborious for volume customers, so they get a special key that does not require activation. Such a key could be used to install an unlimited number of copies. The leaked key works with three versions of Windows Server 2003, though Microsoft would not say which versions. Microsoft's legal department has begun scouring the Internet to track down possible piracy. http://news.com.com/2100-1009-995879.html?tag=fd_lede1_hed ************************************************************************** Educational CyberPlayGround links to Technology <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/Home_TECHNOLOGY.html> Find Information on Security for Teachers, Administrators, Ed.
