TSA pledges CAPPS II privacy

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) director Admiral James Loy 
outlined privacy protection measures in the TSA's upcoming Computer 
Assisted Passenger Prescreening System II (CAPPS II), set to replace the 
flawed CAPPS currently in use as of May 2003. CAPPS II would use only four 
passenger attributes to determine risk: name, address, phone, number, and 
date of birth. Further, the information would not be kept in a database, 
but destroyed after the passenger has traveled. CAPPS II is intended to 
reduce random searches, confusion among people with names that match those 
on watch lists, and what some people call racial and gender profiling. Up 
to 15% of airline passengers undergo additional security screening, and the 
new system should reduce that number.
