************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** Sparks over Power Grid Cybersecurity To counter well-documented vulnerabilities in the networks that control electric power distribution in the United States, the North American Electrical Reliability Council (NERC), on April 9, 2003, published a proposed security standard for North American power companies. The proposal will be voted on in May 2003 and, if passed, compliance will be monitored and enforced. According to the new standards, power companies will be required to launch cyber security training programs, write security policies and identify their critical cyber assets, among other things. Specific cybersecurity guidelines are also in the works. Some industry insiders worry that this new regulatory zeal may force power firms to make substantial security investments in a difficult economic climate. http://www.securityfocus.com/news/3871 ************************************************************************** Educational CyberPlayGround links to Technology <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/Home_TECHNOLOGY.html> Find Information on Security for Teachers, Administrators, Ed.
