Hollywood Faces Key Court Battle Over DVD Copying

A case between Hollywood movie studios and software firm 321 Studios, to be 
heard in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on 
April 25, 2003, will be a crucial step in defining the meaning of 
anti-copyright provisions of the controversial 1998 Digital Millennium 
Copyright Act (DMCA). The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), 
which represents major film studies, argues that software made by 321 
Studios would allow movie pirates to make and distribute high-quality 
copies of digital films, thereby infringing upon copyrights and causing 
monetary damage to the movie industry. 321 Studios claims that its 
technology would simply allow users to make copies of movies for their own 
personal 'fair use'.
