Inmate claims he acquired personal info via a prison PC

In a letter to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, someone claiming to be an
inmate at a state prison provided the Social Security numbers of several
prison staffers, claiming that he obtained them by taking advantage of lax
computer security procedures. Prison system spokeswoman Dina Tyler denied
that the information could have been obtained either from the Internet or
from the prison system's main computer system, but admitted that it could
have come from a personal computer not connected to the Internet or the
prison's internal systems. Investigations into the incident are ongoing and
it is possible that the letter could have been written by a disgruntled
prison system employee, rather than an inmate.

FBI reports Internet fraud complaints tripled in 2002
A report issued on April 9, 2003 by the Internet Fraud Complaint Center,
run jointly by the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, shows
huge increases in Internet fraud complaints in 2002. Overall, 48,252
complaints referred to prosecutors were reported in 2002, almost three
times as many as in 2001 ('only' 16,755 complaints). The most common forms
of online fraud listed in the report were auction fraud, non-delivery of
promised merchandise, credit card fraud and fake investments. Total dollar
losses from reported Internet fraud were $54 million, up from $17 million
the previous year. These figures are believed to be just the tip of the
iceberg however.
