Science agency seeks place at 'cutting edge' of data mining

The National Science Foundation has announced that it will supplement eight
projects by $4 million over the next two years to "go beyond" current
research in data-mining, under the Management of Knowledge Intensive
Dynamic Systems (MKIDS) program. MKIDS goes beyond traditional data-mining
technologies in their role as decision-making tools, pooling data from
various business departments, and providing tools to monitor the effects of
a change and fine-tune the decision process. One project in development at
Carnegie Mellon University aims to find organizational "failure points"
from e-mail, phone call, and personnel data; a Stanford project will "help
managers design organizations the way engineers design bridges." The
National Science Foundation leads two interagency efforts: one for
information technology and another for nanotech.
