Canadian Firms a Favorite Destination for Hackers say Experts

Canada ranks as the third most popular target country for hackers,
according to Claudia Popa, a Toronto-based security consultant. Attacks for
March 2003 have increased 1,000% over March 2002, causing $36 million in
damages. Popa does not consider Canadian companies wide open to attack, but
places the blame on the lack of preparation and information sharing -
though Canada has "pockets" of security awareness. General information
technology budgets exceed security budgets 20 times over. Tom Keenan, a
computer security expert at the University of Calgary, says efforts to
tighten physical security are slowly turning to cybersecurity, but
describes Canada as "very vulnerable."
