Colleges seek slice of U.S. security pie
The Keystone Alliance, made up of Penn State, the University of
Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh,
recently showcased technology and research for the Homeland Security
Department (HSD), hoping to gain a portion of the $803 million allocated
for science and technology efforts in 2004. Penn State has researched using
brain scans to detect when someone is lying. Carnegie Mellon presented a
small helicopter which flew over and mapped the wreckage of Flight 93 after
the September 11 attacks, and a robotic snake to explore debris and
navigate tight spaces. The universities also presented research into such
topics as mapping terrorist finances, cybersecurity, and traveling weather
stations. Other colleges across the U.S. will also be pitching projects to
HSD for research funds.
