Banks targeted in Windows hack attack

Internet Security Systems' (ISS) Australian branch reports that malicious
hackers in Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands have targeted a Windows
vulnerability in an attempt to crack the computers of the country's largest
financial institutions, including many banks. The targeted flaw, found in
an implementation of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), was discovered by ISS and
reported to Microsoft September 2003; Microsoft publicly announced the flaw
with its April 2004 patch release. The attacks began at 8:00 a.m.. Friday,
April 23, 2004, and escalated throughout the day. ISS alerted its customers
and sent messages to Australia's top 500 private and top 500 public
companies. A successful crack would allow an attacker to control important
servers and compromise sensitive data.
