************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** From: "David P. Dillard" <jwne@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 14:02:57 -0500 (EST) The Chronicle of Education is a fee based publication online and in print that some of those on this discussion group may have access to full text online through EBSCOHost, ProQuestDirect or Infotrac of Gale via their college or public library. I found that EBSCO carries the Chronicle fulltext by checking it personally and found full text listings for the Chronicle in Openly JAKE (I only report on these things, I do not name them). EBSCO carries the full text from 1990 to present while Openly JAKE lists the other databanks as carrying this title from 1995 online fulltext. Openly JAKE <http://jake.openly.com/> By the way, for those wanting to be less Openly about it, there is an alternative, actually the original, JAKE site: JAKE: Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment <http://jake.med.yale.edu/> Having gotten that off of my chest, I would like to point out that the Chronicle of Higher Education also provides a considerable amount of valuable information on its website that the public can access without a subscription. Now, getting down to my purpose, one of the very valuable resources on this website for this important college news resource is an excellent coverage of TITLE IX that will provide those looking for background on Title IX as well as the researcher on this subject a valuable source of material on this currently hot subject, in fact the page covers gender equity in sports that is actually broader in scope than just Title IX. The Chronicle of Higher Education Gender Equity in College Sports <http://chronicle.com/stats/genderequity/> Here are some of the things you will find using this resource: Information about specific colleges regarding Title IX accessed via a drop down menu Search by N.C.A.A. Division Search by State Search by Conference The information provided for each college is tabular and statistical for the most part with some text commentary. The statisical data provided is substantial. ****************************************************************** LITERACY FROM HOME LANGUAGE TO THE STANDARD Why don't people vote? 50% of all Americans over 65 years old are functionally illiterate. 60% of the Urban School Children do not graduate High School of the 40% that do they are only reading at 4th grade level. Division I institutions Other studies DOCUMENTS & OPINION The full text of documents Opinion articles and letters to the editor ============================= I hope those following or researching about gender equity in sports will use this group of resources and that they will also find them quite useful. By the way, for any who did not catch the significance of JAKE as a resource, this is a tool that enables one to find out which databases cover a periodical as an index, as an abstracting service and as a full text resource. JAKE's coverage of subject fields is very broad, as broad as what is carried by the databases whose periodical contents it indexes.
