Sports writing is a substantial component of future studies of sports, so
that the creation of a sports writers organization that covers Southern
Africa may be an important factor to the improvement of the future
historical record of sports in Southern Africa.

Sweden's Institute for Further Education of Journalists (FOJO) intends to
use its scheduled sports reporting workshop in Luanda, Angola, to create a
self-sustaining network of sports reporters across southern Africa.

Planners hope the network also will encourage broader debate on research
and reporting methods, ethics, 'brown envelope' journalism, and the
management of sources.

The training workshop itself also will attempt to discuss the role of
sports journalism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
region, as well as in local communities. Participants will discuss the
role sports journalists play in democratic development, and how sports
journalism can be expanded to report on more contextual social topics.
