As described in the latest edition of "What's in the News," a current events program produced for schoolchildren by Penn State Public Broadcasting, Powell's rise to the top marked the progress the United States had made since the time of the Buffalo Soldiers -- units of black cavalry soldiers established after the U.S. Civil War. Following an Act of Congress in 1866 to create the first all-black units in the peacetime army, two units formed in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and in Greenville, La., to protect settlers, cattle drives and frontier towns from attack. The Buffalo Soldiers also explored and mapped parts of the American west, built frontier outposts, laid telegraph line and repaired railroads. This week, "What's in the News" takes a look at efforts to educate Americans about the Buffalo Soldiers and other current events.
