First of all, a word about Gary Price. He has astounding and extremely
valuable resource pages on the web for those seeking information and I
invite all who read this message to have a look at the tremendous and
tremendously useful web resources that he has created mega-lists of.

Secondly, useful as background to this message, I had posted an extensive
message regarding ERIC that provides extensive listing of its
organizational subject specialty resources and its tremendous list of
services. That these services are in danger of reduction or elimination
would be a tremendous blow to education in every field world wide.

For those wishing rescue from dealing with such a complex link, I have
provided this shorter link from Make a Shorter Link

I hope that people in this field will share the widespread and deep
concern in the fields of education and librarianship over the potential
loss of substantial portions of the ERIC database and information resource
network. There is no field or discipline of which education is not an
important component. ERIC covers education from infancy to post-graduate
and adult continuing levels.

Some of the valuable ERIC Database and Clearinghouse resources are
highlighted on the Educational Cyberplayground website

Topical title searches of the ERIC database illustrate the the tremendous
range of knowledge provided by ERIC.

Consider a search of ERIC for the word Journalism in which only those
records that have that word in article title are searched

3994 documents found (25 returned) for query : (journalism) :Title

Here are a few additional title searches that illustrate the wide range of
subject coverage by the invaluable ERIC database.

27 documents found (25 returned) for query : ((sport or sports) and
psychology) :Title

247 documents found (25 returned) for query : (tourism or tourists or
vacationers or vacationing ) :Title

Given a database and infomation network this important, please provide
careful attention to the information below. Anyone concerned has
permission to share my portion of the message to others and to other
discussion groups. The permission to share the content below is self
contained in the message below.

Sincerely,
David Dillard Research Librarian

Subject: [DIG_REF] A Large Chunk of ERIC's Funding May Disappear

I just posted a "web" version of the following message to my site but
think it's 1000% worthy of a direct post to the list.

---------

SPREAD THE WORD!

I was given permission from the folks at AskERIC to post the following
message that was originally posted to a school library media specialisr
listserv.

I think it's time for ALL of us who use ERIC's services to make sure our
comments make it to the right people. --

++Posted With Permission of Author++
ERIC and AskERIC need your support more now than at any other time.

On April 11, the Statement of Work for the next ERIC contract was posted.
http://www.eps.gov/EPSData/ED/Synopses/3286/Reference-Number-ERIC2003/ERICDraftS
OW.doc

There is NO mention anywhere of AskERIC, user services, publications, or
even the 16 different subject specific clearinghouses. This contract would
consolidate ERIC into one facility that would maintain the database only.

All comments on this Draft Statement of Work are due to Jeff Halsted via
e-mail: Jeff.C.Halsted@xxxxxx by May 9, 2003, 4:00 PM EST.

PLEASE take time in the next week to send an email with your comments. You
may want to browse around the AskERIC site to get an idea of what will be
missing, including hosting listservs such as LM_NET [a listserv for
library media professionals]. The various subject specific clearinghouses
are listed here.

http://askeric.org/
http://www.eric.ed.gov/sites/barak.html

The Clearinghouse on Information & Technology is the one most of you would
use for your subject area. Consider the ERIC digest and publication topics
that have been useful to you in your jobs, earning your MLS, assisting
teachers in your schools. Topics of recent digests from the ERIC/IT
Clearinghouse are here. http://www.ericit.org/ericdigests.shtml
