I think it is important to use news stories as teachable moments for
students related to online predation. Here is a recent story:

E-Mailing Man Poses as Woman to Entice Girl -Police
Tue February 25, 2003 06:22 PM ET
PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - A male truck driver posed as a young woman for
three years while pursuing a sexually explicit e-mail relationship with
an adolescent girl, police said on Tuesday.

A study by the Girl Scouts revealed that the girls they interviewed
"appear to have difficulty accepting that someone they bond with
emotionally (in online conversations) could be lying to them." "(T)hey
appear to be especially swayed by online friends who express caring and
emotional sentiments toward them."

For three years this teen was engaging in a sexually explicit e-mail
relationship with a male posing as a female and she did not pick up on
any danger signs.
